I have always felt that the Russian language is one of the most misunderstood. Having so long been the “villain” of the Cold War to us Americans, the Russian language has often, if not always, played a “Bad Guy.” For this it is often interpreted as a crude and harsh language — and it is truthfully neither.

It is, in reality, a language drenched in poignant emotion. It sinks with a sense of underlying hardship and soars with a wonderful sense of meter and tempo. It contains more depth in pronunciation than the English language could ever hope to convey. In its delicate balance of guttural, flat and rolling tones it is capable of so much more than English.

You do not have to understand the words of the clip I provided above (I surely don’t yet) to know that he is talking about something he truly loves and is passionate about. And it is a passion that is entirely different from the American kind, but just as real. It is a softer, more understated and revered love he speaks of.

And even listening to “normal” Russians speak, not just famous Russian bards like Bulat Okudzhava, you can hear the same subtle and all the same captivating and enchanting tones and movements.

The Russian language is far more beautiful than the Western world gives it credit for.

I am so glad you have been stalking my blog!
    you write muy beautifully… :)

it is so cool to hear someone else so passionate about a different language and I’m SO excited you get to go!! that’s how i am with spanish and italian, but it’s awesome to pursue one that is less understood, and I think that you can only better yourself by trying to understand what others just deem as harsh or different.

you are neat. how is life?

    Well thanks :)

It saddens me really that there aren’t more of us that are really enchanted by a foreign language, in America at least. In Europe it is practically survival to know at least two languages and not uncommon to know five or more! Languages are all so beautiful and important and reveal so much about the culture and the people who use them.

Life’s going pretty well on my end — just mostly starting to freak out about leaving for Irkutsk!! How about you?

I love taking pictures of people. It’s a conclusion that I’ve come to time after time, as well as the fact that I would love the opportunity to take more pictures of more people. It’s why I’ve just registered elysekufeldtphotography.com, so I can centralize my efforts and have a website I can point people toward who are even remotely interested.
