Autumn Redesign is Live

Well. It took about a dozen different design prototypes/mock-ups over the last month before I landed on this design. I wanted something simple, something elegant and something that was, above all, focused on clean typography. I think that this design accomplishes all of those goals.

In this redesign, I also adjusted the type of content and its structure. The journal is still in place. The about page is still in place, but the portfolio page is now a combination of writings, photography and web design. The photography section points you to either my flickr photostream or my new, official portfolio. And web design points you to my new carbonmade portfolio. Services is a new section entirely. With the launch of this redesign, I am formally offering writing, photography and web design services. If you’re curious as to what I’m offering, I advise checking it out. There are also forms available on the portfolio and services page if you’re interested in a quote. In the coming weeks, I’ll be writing more about my turn toward freelance and my goals.

There are still a few things to be done with this design, however:

  1. Optimize for IE
  2. Integrate twitter and flickr into the footer

But, other than that, let me know what you think!

Nice redesign! I’m glad for the focus on the text. Though I am a little confused on things — I’m not sure if that’s because I have a slight cold or if there’s something confusing. Maybe I’ll come back in a few days to explain, if possible.

Thanks Stephanie! Like I said on your blog, I’m happy to have found you again!

Could you try to clarify what it is you’re confused about? You’ve left me confused! haha. :)

    Again, great to see you!

I think it’s the front page. The style of putting different sections right after another always confuses me — I tend to think of a front page as something that shouldn’t have to be scrolled through to get an idea of the content. I think that stems from my class on journalism, where the most important things need to be ABOVE the fold. In this case the fold is the window, and scrolling down means it’s not as important. So the excerpts from each page jar that experience by making the visitor scroll to read all of them.

This is a general complaint for this type of layout design, not something you’re the only one who’s done, so it’s not like it needs to be fixed or something. I’m just trying to figure out why I dislike certain types of layouts… aka… I’m rambling.

And, the “search the site” is in an awkward place, though I almost wonder if it’s just my computer/browser…

  • Elyse Says:

Fair enough. I guess I see it as kind of a more informative table of contents page, but I can see where it would be confusing. I’ll keep that in mind for future!

I have it right next to the navigation, vertically centered. Where is it for you? Maybe it is a browser-based problem. If not, I shall have to find a less awkward place for it, eah?

Uhhhh… it’s like this: http://home.comcast.net/~themusouka/ek-header.gif I’m using Firefox3, which I assume is similar to what you use (or not), on Mac, which is probably the difference.

Ooooh if I make my screen wider it goes into place. Aha. It’s all my fault then. Still, I like my somewhat narrower screen.
